Scallop shell mosaic is a professional handicraft. The main job of craftmen is to make horizontal lacquered boards hung in temples or pagodas and some special stuffs like mahogany, tea cabinet, vase, pipe, betel nut, tobacco box, etc. with the themes selected in the ancients ordered by the nobles. The mosaic can be divided into two large types, wood/ copper/ tortoise mosaic products, and mosaic (scallop shell) lacquer.
Scallop shell mosaic craft derived from Chuon Ngo village, Chuyen My Ward, Phu Xuyen District, (Old) Ha Tay Province. In the 19 th century, good mosaic craftmen of Chuon Ngo village migrated to Hanoi, establishing Hang Khay Street (a.k.a Tho Kham Street). The shops in Hang Khay Street sold and produced on the spot. Nowadays, while there is only one mosaic shop on Hang Khay street, there are many ones selling and producing scallop shell mosaic products by craftmen from Chuon Village all around Hanoi.
