GIỚI THIỆU VỀ SỰ KIỆN

Dear beloved readers, friends, supporters and partners,

This October, Hanoi Grapevine will be celebrating our 10th anniversary. 10 years!

It has been a long way since our founder Brian Ring created Hanoi Grapevine on a wordpress blog in 2007. Nowadays, Hanoi Grapevine is a popular website providing arts and culture information to tens of thousands of readers, both Vietnamese and foreign residents, students and professionals, artists and their audiences. We have connected thousands of people, inspired a lot more, and nurtured a love for the arts among countless young people.

This 10th anniversary will be a very special one as founder Brian Ring together with his long-time Vietnamese management team of three will officially hand over Hanoi Grapevine to a new generation.

So, save the date! Come and drink a toast with us to say hello to Brian one more time, to meet the Hanoi Grapevine team, old and new, and to enjoy a concert of our elegant music selection.

Artist line-up:

• Nguyen Duc Minh (Vietnamese Jew’s harp) & Quyen Thien Dac (saxophone)
• Nguyen Thuy Dung (Vietnamese zither) & Daniel Henneberry (guitar, vocal) & David Payne (guitar)
• Linh Ha (vocal) & Corey Keating (electronic)
• Lark Minkous (ambient soundscape)

‘Chem Gio’ project with Nguyen Duc Minh & Quyen Thien Dac:

The highlight of the night, ‘Chem Gio’ is a new collaboration by two well-known Vietnamese artists, Nguyen Duc Minh on Vietnamese Jew’s harp and Quyen Thien Dac on saxophone, a musical project combining jazz improvisation and traditional rhythm from the ethnic minorities in the Northwest mountains of Viet Nam.

Quyen Thien Dac performs his composition ‘Cheo’:

Vietnamese Jew’s harp (đàn môi) duet by Nguyen Duc Minh and Tran Quang Hai:

Nguyen Thuy Dung & Daniel Henneberry & David Payne:

A collaboration between traditional and contemporary music styles, the trio will bring three original pieces of music with live processed guitar, processed acoustic sounds and vocals by Daniel Henneberry (UK), processed guitar by David Payne (AUS) and Vietnamese zither (đàn tranh) by Nguyen Thuy Dung (VN).

Nguyen Thuy Dung and Daniel Henneberry as part of Tone Ripples:

Linh Ha & Corey Keating:

Linh Ha taps into the emotion of wonder, uplift, sorrow and reflection, through improvised looped vocal arrangements, focusing on the spirit of the beat. Listen to her music and let her take you to the land of mysterious creatures flitting through the air of woven vocals.

Corey Keating is an electronic musician currently studying at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, where he is pursuing doctoral studies in composition and music technology. His recent work (as Audio Geometry) explores process-based electronic music production – a kind of dubby, washed-out, melodic glitch focusing on musical beauty in system design, proportionality, aleatory, and error. As a recent Fulbright recipient, Corey is conducting research in Vietnam relating to contemporary musical culture and practices, both acoustic and electronic, and the ways in which modern technology supports, preserves, and advances these traditions.

Lark Minkous:

Live Ambient soundscapes – Tracks created using atmospheric samples and acoustic recordings. Slow unfolding patterns subtly reveal themselves, drifting in, out and between peaceful bright harmonies and dark, rich, complex spaces.
