EVENT INFORMATION

The 9th symphony in D Minor op. 125 is one of the most famous and most popular works of classical music. It’s Ludwig van Beethoven’s last finished symphony, which he wrote in 1824 despite the fact that he was deaf at this point of life.

Goethe-Institut presents this event as an alternative for the annual Christmas concert. Tenor Martin Lattke and soprano Steffi Lehmann came all the way from Germany for this concert to perform together with the Vietnamese National Symphony Orchestra (VNSO) the 9th symphony in Hanoi Opera House.

The key work of symphonic music which is the 9th symphony didn't lose its actuality even after two centuries. To this date it is the most played symphony of the world and was adopted as the anthem of Europe from the European Union: "Beethovens ninth" is a symbol of unity and diversity.

A prominent feature of this symphony is the final movement. Apart from the orchestra there are vocal solists and a mixed choir. For the first time in a symphony of Beethoven there is a human voice as an instrument. The text is taken from Friedrich Schillers "An die Freude". In the year 2001 the original script was taken into the world document heritage of the UNESCO.
