Hang Trong painting is one of the three most prominent traditional painting lines of Vietnam, Dong Ho paintings (Ha Bac), Hang Trong paintings (Hanoi), and Kim Hoang paintings (Ha Tay). Hang Trong is also the second largest center of paintings in Vietnam, after Dong Ho.
Hang Trong painting has a different technique and style from Dong Ho painting in Kinh Bac (Ha Bac). While Dong Ho painting uses wood cut frames to print the outlines and to color the paintings, Hàng Trống painting uses wood cut frames to outline the painting on the Do paper, then followed by the hand-coloring. The wood cut frames are all engraved by craft men, based on the standard painting model, which is called "making the mold". When the outlines are completed, the artisan will use brushes to color the painting with light or dark colors, depending on the content, lines and types of paintings. Because the painting is painted by hand, every single Hang Trong painting has its own creation.
