Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra:
The Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra (VNSO) was established by Decision Number 79/VH-QD on June 14, 1984 under the Ministry of Culture (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism). During its development, VNSO gradually gained remarkable achievements significantly. Since the past decade, the orchestra has improved its performance quality, not only to be recognized and highly appreciated by the audience, the press, musical critics, and colleagues in Vietnam but also to be commended by other countries via concert tours.
The VNSO today performs almost 40 concerts each year with a diverse repertoire of classical, romantic, and contemporary music. It performs musical pieces not only by Vietnamese composers but also by world-renowned composers, including Mahler Cycle, Beethoven Cycle, Mozart Cycle, Brahms Cycle, Schubert Cycle, Bruckner Cycle, etc., under the baton of many distinguished conductors with great contributions to the growth of the VNSO, such as Honna Tetsuji (Music Director of the VNSO since 2009), Colin Metters, Fukumura Yoshikazu, Lê Phi Phi, Jonas Alber, Marc Kissozy, and more. They have also performed with renowned soloists such as People’s Artist Dang Thai Son, Tsutsumi Tsuyoshi, Tamás Varga, Goto Ryu, Imai Nobuko, Bui Cong Duy, Premysl Vojta, Stefan Schilli, Yamashita Yosuke, Rainer Honeck and so on.
VNSO's highlights include:
• 2008: VNSO at “La folle journee au Japon” attracted more than 1,000,000 spectators.
• 2010: The Mahler 8 Concert, celebrating the Millennial Anniversary of Hanoi with the participation of nearly 1,000 musicians and chorus singers from Vietnam and many countries worldwide.
• 2011: VNSO First Harmony Tour USA, concerts at two prestigious music centers – Carnegie Hall (New York) and Boston Symphony Hall (Boston).
• 2012: VNSO Concert Tour Vietnam – Laos – Cambodia, celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Laos and the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Cambodia.
• July 2013: VNSO Concert Tour Italy (Venice, Florence, and Rome) celebrating 40 years of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Italy, including a special concert at the Italian Presidency Palace in front of President Giorgio Napolitano.
• September 2013: VNSO Concert Tour Japan (Yokohama, Koriyama, Osaka, Nagoya, Tokyo, Nara) to celebrate 40 years of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan, including a special concert at the Tokyo Opera City with the appearance of the
• Japanese Prince and also in Nara Todaiji Temple with the attendance of the late Prime Minister Abe Shinzo's wife, Akie.
• September 2014: VNSO First Russian Concert Tour to Moscow and St. Petersburg in the flame of Vietnam Cultural Days in Russia.
• May 2018: Participated in the 7th China-ASEAN Music Festival in Nanning, Guangxi, China.
• July 2018: VNSO Japan Concert Tour to Osaka and Tokyo to celebrate the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan, including a special concert at Suntory Hall, Tokyo, with the participation of the Emperor and Empress of Japan.
• 2018-2020: VNSO performed a Beethoven symphony series in Beethoven Cycle to celebrate Beethoven’s 250th Birthday Celebration.
• November 2022, VNSO performed at the 39th Korea International Music Festival at Seoul Arts Center to celebrate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Korea.

Conductor Honna Tetsuji:
• Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Vietnam National Orchestra (VNSO) since 2009.
• Studied under Royal Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra (1989-1991) and London Sinfonietta (1995-1996) as hospitant by Japanese Cultural Affair’s program.
• Honna was appointed permanent conductor of the Osaka Symphony Orchestra (1995-2001) and Permanent Guest Conductor of the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra (1998-2001). Since 2021, he has been artistic advisor of Vietnam Youth Orchestra (VYO).
• Awards include 2nd prize in Tokyo International Music Competition for conducting (1985), 2nd prize of Toscanini International Conducting Competition Parma Italy (1990), 1st prize and the Bartok prize of Budapest International Conducting Competition (1992), Muramatsu Prize (1994), Nippon Steel Music Award - Fresh Artist (1995), Osaka Stage Arts Encouragement Award after All Symphonies of Franz Schubert (1997), Ambassador prize of Embassy of Japan in Vietnam (2009), Foreign Minister Prize of Japan (2011), Medal by Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports & Tourism (2012), Vietnam Union of Friendship Organization Award (2018), Watanabe Akeo Music Fundation Special Award (2019).
Conducted numerous orchestras including Scala Philharmonic in Milano, Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, Orchestra Sinfonica Dell'Emilia Romagna "Arturo Toscanini", Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, Philharmonia Orchestra London, Hungarian State Philharmonic, Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Budapest Philharmonic, Zagreb Philharmonic, Brno State Philharmonic Orchestra, Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, Slovenian Philharmonic, Romanian Radio Orchestra, Malaysia Philharmonic, Shanghai Philarmonic, Schenzen Symphony Orchestra, The Philippines Philharmonic, Macedonian Philharmonic Orchestra and almost of all Japanese Orchestras.
Invited to many international festivals including The Carinthischer Sommer in Austria, The Salzburg Spring Festival, The Bartók Festival in Hungary, Mostly Mozart Festival in Tokyo(Tokyu Bunkamura), Seoul in Autumn, The Asian Music Festival in Tokyo, The Oulunsalo Music Festival in Finland, The Suntory Summer Festival, The Ditto Festival in Seoul, The Karuizawa International Music Festival "La Folle Journee au Japon”, Festival Les Nuits Pianistiques Aix en Provence, France and The "Milano Musica" contemporary music festival at the Teatro alla Scala and so on.
