Giải thưởng Emmy được xem là một trong những giải thưởng cao quý nhất của công nghiệp truyền hình và thường được xem là giải Oscar của thể loại truyền hình. Giải đã góp phần phát triển công nghiệp truyền hình lớn mạnh, kể cả các chương trình giải trí, tin tức, tài liệu, hay thể thao. Giải thưởng Emmy lần thứ 73 năm 2021, tiếp nối những giá trị này, sẽ được tổ chức bởi Cedric the Entertainer, đạo diễn bởi Hamish Hamilton và điều hành sản xuất bởi Reginald Hudlin và Ian Stewart.

Tiếp theo là bộ phim của Marvel và Disney Plus WandaVision với 23 đề cử; The Handmaid’s Tale của Hulu với 21 đề cử. HBO và HBO Max đứng đầu các nền tảng trực tuyến với tổng số 130 đề cử, theo sau là Netflix với 129. Disney + xếp sau đó với 71 đề cử, trong khi các đài khác như NBC tự hào có 46 đề cử, trong khi CBS có 26 đề cử và ABC có 23 đề cử.

The Crown của Netflix đã giành được bốn chiến thắng trong khi Mare of Easttown của HBO, Ted Lasso của Apple TV +; Hacks của HBO Max và Last Week Tonight With John Oliver của HBO có hai chiến thắng cho mỗi phim. Kate Winslet đã mang về giải thưởng Nữ diễn viên chính xuất sắc cho Mare of Easttown, trong khi đó nam diễn viên Ewan McGregor thắng giải Nam diễn viên chính xuất sắc cho Halston tại hạng mục Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

Ted Lasso  giành được giải Emmy cho Phim hài xuất sắc vào tối Chủ nhật tại Lễ trao giải Emmy hàng năm lần thứ 73, bộ phim hài bóng đá của Apple TV + cảm thấy dễ chịu đã mang về bốn chiếc cúp quan trọng. Với sự tham gia của Jason Sudeikis trong vai huấn luyện viên bóng đá lạc quan chuyển đến London để huấn luyện một đội bóng đá Premiere League.

The Crown đã mang về giải Phim chính kịch xuất sắc, đánh bại các ứng cử viên khác như The Boys, The Mandalorian, Lovecraft Country, Pose, The Handmaid’s Tale, This Is Us và Bridgerton. Bộ phim truyền hình về cờ vua của Netflix, The Queen’s Gambit wins đã giành chiến thắng trong Series giới hạn xuất sắc tại Emmy 2021 lần thứ 73. Đó là chiến thắng Emmy thứ 11 của chương trình trong năm nay, bao gồm cả Đạo diễn xuất sắc cho một loạt phim giới hạn của Scott Frank.
